More than two decades ago, Communities in Schools in Jacksonville established a program called the Student Enrichment Program. Each school in Duval County has a full-time site coordinator who works with 90 to 100 pupils individually. Throughout the year, these students get one-on-one and group counseling to help them achieve their objectives and develop the necessary life skills to succeed. Site coordinators help children find the community services they need by making home visits and involving their parents.

One-on-one meetings between site coordinators and selected students from the school’s student population are supplemented by school-wide services including job fairs, men’s and ladies seminars, and literacy initiatives, which reach hundreds of additional students each year. The Jim Moran Foundation, the DuBow Family Foundation, and Duval County Public Schools all contribute to the Student Enrichment Program’s budget, check these guys out.

Gear-up communities:

GEAR UP Communities in Schools is a partner in a seven-year Federal GEAR UP grant with Duval County School District.

• Students at DC Public Schools’ 10 middle schools were the first to benefit from this program, which was launched in 2017-18 with the 7th-grade cohorts.
• After high school, pupils will get a year of post-graduation support from the award.
• A total of 364 students from seven different high schools are under the care of Communities in Schools.
• Pupils must learn how to read since it sets the stage for the rest of their academic lives.
• Duval Reads, our literacy program, offers one-on-one and small group tutoring to primary school pupils.

Reading comprehension for students:

Since 1999, Duval Reads has been helping kids in Duval County Public Schools reach their reading objectives.

• We aim to improve each student’s reading comprehension by at least 10% this year. Full- and part-time AmeriCorps tutors work with their assigned children in the schools regularly.
• For pupils who need to study from home, they may also connect electronically with them when needed.
• Volunteer Florida, an agency of the Corporation for National and Community Service, provides the bulk of the financing for Duval Reads.
• Many of a student’s most difficult issues arise after the school day has ended. At our Afterschool Program, primary and middle school kids may feel at ease, no matter whether they are struggling with hunger or scholastic difficulties. Students may finish their schoolwork under the supervision of a teacher and participate in athletics, symphony, robotics, and more as part of the free program.

Highly skilled afterschool staff members:

Academic enrichment, sports and leisure, life skills, cultural enrichment, parental participation, and community service are all part of our Afterschool Program’s six core areas. At the end of the day, kids engage in enrichment activities like cheering and dancing, as well as arts and crafts, and sports, all taught by highly skilled afterschool staff members.

All of our after-school venues provide unique options, such as our relationship with Shiva Robotics for a robotics program. Robots are built and programmed by students as a team, allowing them to experience hands-on stem education.
